Gwanda mum gives birth to 6kg baby By Staff
Reporter So big was her tummy during pregnancy that relatives jokingly told her she would give birth to TWINS. Onicah Ndlovu, 29, gave birth to the baby by caesarian section on Monday. Both mother and son were "doing well", Sibongile Mlingwa, the Matron at the Lady Rodwell Maternity Clinic told the Chronicle newspaper. "I cannot believe how big this baby is," she told the paper. "So far, I have spent most of the day breastfeeding him. In the ninth month of my pregnancy, I was so big I couldn’t move around. Some people actually thought that I was going to give birth to twins." Doctors at the health institution said a normal baby who has reached the full term of pregnancy would weigh between 2,5 kg and 3,8 kg. However, large babies, also known as macrosomic in medical terms, can weigh up to 4,5 kgs. Matron Mlingwa said: “From the assessments done by the paediatricians, the child’s vital signs are normal. With the birth of a very large baby, you have to ensure that he is getting enough milk, monitor sugar levels in the blood and make sure that he is breathing properly." She said getting babies as big as Ndlovu’s baby was a “very rare occurrence”. Most babies, she added, weigh six kilogrammes between four and five months. Ndlovu already
has two children. |
