ZIMBABWEAN police were on the hunt last night for a suspected killer dad who executed his two sons with an axe in the Midlands city of Gweru.

After allegedly hacking his two sons Dadirai,4, and Tendai,3, the man, Thomas Funny Ndebele of Rhoville Farm in Somabula is said to have fled, apparently to take his own life, the state-run Herald newspaper reported Tuesday.

Police say the bodies of the two toddlers were found covered in a blanket early Sunday morning by one of Ndebele's friends, a neighbor.

Next to the bodies was a note, apparently written by Ndebele, telling "anyone reading it" to contact the farm proprietor that he had "gone to kill myself".

Police spokesperson, Inspector Jessie Banda, said preliminary investigations indicated that Dadirai and Tendai died from wounds inflicted at the back of their heads by an axe.

"We can only be in a position to know the motive behind the killings in the event of us arresting and questioning the suspect, whom we believe, is still on the run," she said.

The Herald said Ndebele was married to a 23-year-old woman employed as a housemaid in nearby Kwekwe. The wife is said to have returned to Kwekwe on January 17 this year leaving the children behind with her husband.

"We are still investigating to ascertain the reason behind the brutal murder. We would like to appeal to members of the public with any information leading to the arrest of the suspect to approach any nearest police station," said Insp Banda.

In the past few months, several cases of killings within families have been reported.

A Hurungwe man last September inexplicably struck and killed his seven-year-old niece with an axe while she was taking a bath.

Tafadzwa Nhira of Mucheni Village was struck once on the head as she bathed near the door to a kitchen.

In December last year in Chatsworth, Gutu, a man, suspected to be mentally sick, allegedly pummeled to death his three-month-old baby, incensed by the baby’s cries for milk at night.

Clemence Chagwiza (33) of Plot 9 Swaarveden Farm was reported to have first slapped his son Kokerai.

He then struck him again with a shoe before hitting him all over the legs with an umbrella rod.

Apparently angered by the baby’s persistent cries, the father then kicked him with his feet on the head, leading to his death about three hours later.
