Man who sired 2 kids with own daughter jailed

By Takunda Maodza

A 52-year-old Harare man Statement Gamara who sired two siblings from an incestuous affair with his daughter was last week slapped with an effective two years-eight months in jail by Harare magistrate, Judith Tsamba.

The daughter, Monica, was however spared a jail term but sentenced to 420 hours of community service. In sparing Monica a jail term, Tsamba placed more moral blame on Gamara, the father, saying he forced his child into adulthood since the incestuous affair flourished when the daughter was still a minor.

This was after Prosecutor Savious Kufandada had asked the court to hand down a custodial term arguing that such a punishment was desirable in whistling the right STATEMENT to people indulging in such uncultured activities.

Initially Tsamba had sentenced Gamara, of Old Mabvuku, to three years in custody but suspended 12 months on condition that he desists from such activities within the next five years.

Additional eight months were ‘piled’ on Gamara’s two year jail term following revelations that the father had tried to defeat the course of justice by offering a Chipo Chikwinya, a material witness in the case, a $1 million “fate” cheque.
“On June 9 this year, Gamara went to block 7A -582, Mbare Flats where Chipo Chikwinya resides.

Gamara, fully aware that Chikwinya was a State witness in the incest case, asked her to accompany him to the city centre where he promised to withdraw $1 million for her as a buy-out of testifying,” read the charges.

Tsamba initially slapped Gamara with 14 months in custody for attempting to defeat the course of justice before she reduced the sentence by six months.
Gamara and Monica pleaded guilty when they first appeared in court last week sending globules of tears tumbling down the face of shell-shocked relatives that were seated in the dock.

According to Kufandada, about 25 years ago Gamara impregnated his sister’s friend only known as Stella and the two got ‘married.’ As per custom Stella went back to her parents’ home to give birth and was blessed with a baby girl who was given the name Monica. However, she did not go back to her husband after giving birth.

The court heard that Monica grew up in the custody of her grandparents and her mother.

After Stella failed to return home, Gamara married another woman. In 1993, Gamara demanded custody of Monica and was given the child.
Five years later Monica fell pregnant as a result of a love affair that had burgeoned between her and Gamara.

She lied to her aunt, Hardwick Gamara that the pregnancy belonged to a ‘boyfriend’ in Kuwadzana.

When the aunt organised the elopement of Monica to the Kuwadzana boyfriend, she threatened to kill herself by attempting to take poison. Hiding behind the facade that he did not want his daughter to suffer, Gamara intervened and took custody of Monica.

Later that year, Monica gave birth to a baby boy reinforcing the couple’s ‘marriage’ as they continued to live together.

After she fell pregnant for the second time giving birth to a baby girl, Monica admitted that she was having an affair with her father and that the father was also responsible for the first child,” Kufandada said.

At the time of their arrest the pair were staying together in Mabvuku as husband and wife.
