Dumped baby eaten by dogs

By Staff Reporter

THE half-eaten body of a newly-born baby boy dumped by its mother has been found in Zimbabwe's second largest city of Bulawayo.

Police say they believe it was eaten by dogs, and was possibly dead before the dogs arrived.

Police have now launched an appeal for the mother of the baby to come forward.

Bulawayo police spokesman Inspector Shepherd Sibanda told the local Chronicle newspaper that the body was found near a foot path early Thursday in the poor township of Tshabalala Extension.

The upper part of the body was missing when it was found by a passer-by, Inspector Sibanda said.

He added: “The body had no chest, hands and the head. It is also possible that the missing parts could have been eaten by dogs although investigations are underway to establish what exactly happened."

A recent report in the capital city of Harare claimed that desperate mothers were dumping at least 20-newly-born babies in storm drains and sewage pipes every WEEK.

The dumping of babies is seen as a shocking illustration of the country's economic collapse. Some of the dumped babies, the council report said, were a result of unwanted pregnancies, but others were newborns dumped by mothers unable to support another child.

Inspector Sibanda said preliminary investigations suggested that the infant was killed by its mother at birth before being dumped along a foot path.

He added: “A further assessment of the body revealed that the body could have been dragged by dogs from where it was dumped to the scene where it was found."
