Goat thieves' canine revenge on police officer

By Staff Reporter

A ZIMBABWEAN police officer in the south western rural outpost of Kezi was hospitalised after he was mauled by dogs released by two men he was trying to arrest for stealing goats, a court heard.

The two thieves, wanted for the theft of six goats, laughed at the sight of their canines chasing after two police officers, prosecutors said.

Evil Mandla Power Ndlovu and Nkatazo Ndlovu, both of Sun Yat Sen in Kezi district, were starting combined jail sentences of two years and nine months this week.

Mandla Ndlovu, a village watchman, will serve 18 months, while his partner in crime, Nkatazo, will serve 15 months in jail.

Victor Kudezera, prosecuting, told the court that six goats went missing in the Kafusi area in September. Police investigators were led to the two men.

One of the goats, the court heard, was sold to a spiritual healer identified as Tiri, while another was given to one Brian Baloyi who had given the two men thatch grass. The remainder of the goats were sold, Kudezera said.

Two police officers whose names were given in court as Constable Wabatagore and Constable Dabengwa visited the two men's homestead and tried to make an arrest.

After successfully restraining Mandla Ndlovu, according to the state outline, Nkatazo is said to have set the dogs on the two police officers.

Constable Wabatagore was left bleeding profusely after the dog attack. The two men were later arrested - Umthunywa
