ZIMBABWE has honoured former Zambian leader Dr. Kenneth Kaunda with an Order of the Greatest Zimbabwe award.

Dr. Kaunda confirmed in an interview that Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe had honoured him with one of the highest awards of that country for his contribution during the liberation struggle of Southern Africa.

"When I heard about this, I was very much moved," Dr. Kaunda said. "I hope and pray that I will continue to be worth of honour and trust to comrades in Zimbabwe."

He thanked President Mugabe for honouring him with one of Zimbabwe's highest awards.

"I am thanking comrade Mugabe for thinking of me in this way. This is great for my humble soul," Dr. Kaunda said.

Dr. Kaunda said he considered the award very serious because it symbolised the unity, love and determination, which the freedom fighters exhibited during the liberation struggle for Southern Africa.

He recollected how Zambia faced the external pressure during the liberation struggle for Southern Africa.

"Quite often, we stood alone amongst independent states of Africa," Dr. Kaunda said. "I was very happy that those that we helped to gain independence joined us in liberating South Africa."

Dr. Kaunda said the award should remind upcoming African leaders of the importance of love among Africans during times of difficulties.

President Mugabe would officially present the award to Dr. Kaunda at a state function on August 9 in Harare.
