SOUTH African police have recovered the charred remains of two people suspected to be members of the Zimbabwe Action Support Group who disappeared about a month ago after clashes between the group and MDC supporters, New Zimbabwe.com can reveal.

The two bodies were retrieved from a dump site at Thembisa after an anonymous tip-off last week.

The police have since sent an appeal to the close relatives of Musa Mhlanga of Nkayi and Liberty Ncube of Insiza to come forward so that DNA tests can be carried out to ascertain the identity of the two bodies.

The corpses are currently at a mortuary at Germiston at the East Rand.

Two ZASG members were last seen early last month after violent clashes between members of the ZASG and MDC members following demonstrations in Pretoria against the Zimbabwe government.

The anonymous caller is believed to have told police that the bodies were those of the two missing men, both in their late 20s.

The two missing men are believed to have been kidnapped at their apartment in Johannesburg and bundled into a van and have not been seen since then.

Remember Moyo, the chairman of the ZASG last night told New Zimbabwe.com that he had been called to identify the bodies by the police but failed to identify them because they were burnt beyond recognition.

"We are trying to assist the relatives of our colleagues who disappeared to come so that if these are our members they should at least be given a decent burial. Unfortunately some of the close relatives do not have passports, while others with passports have no visas. We are doing our best for the relatives to come," he said.
