THE body of a Zimbabwean opposition activist abducted from his home turned up at a hospital mortuary in Harare on Tuesday. He was murdered, the Voice of America’s Studio 7 reported Wednesday.

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) now says 45 activists have been killed since a first round general election on March 29.

Tonderai Ndira’s body was found at the Parirenyatwa Hospital mortuary when officials went to pick up the bodies of two other activists, also said to have been killed in post-election violence, the radio reported.

Ndira is said to have been abducted by 10 armed men from his home in Mabvuku township last week, never to be seen alive.

To some, Ndira was not the saint he has been painted in death.

In 2005, he was suspended by the MDC for leading a wave of violent attacks on senior MDC officials accused of disloyalty to party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai.

In 2006, Ndira was fingered as the lead attacker in a brutal assault of Harare North MP Trudy Stevenson, who had supported a break-away from Tsvangirai.

Leading up to the attack, Ndira had again been named in connection with the seizure of vehicles from officials of the other MDC faction led by Arthur Mutambara.

Zimbabweans vote in a second round ballot for President on June 27, but Tsvangirai has stayed out of the country saying he fears for his life. He is battling to end President Robert Mugabe’s 28-year reign.
