MTOLIKI Sibanda, the former opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) MP for Tsholotsho has died.

He celebrated his 54th and last birthday on November 15.

Sibanda died on Monday at his home in Emakhandeni suburb in Bulawayo, an MDC spokesman confirmed.

He had been unwell for several months, the spokesman added.

Sibanda was one of the 57 MDC MP's elected across the country as the party shook Zanu PF's hold on power in the 2000 parliamentary elections.

He lost his seat to an independent, Professor Jonathan Moyo, in elections in March 2005.

Professor Moyo said Wednesday: "He was a courageous man and great servant for the people of Tsholotsho. We send our condolences to his family at this very difficult time."

Burial arrangements had not been announced.
