The state-run Herald newspaper on Wednesday carried a story alleging that officials from the two warring factions of the MDC had met the US ambassador Christopher Dell. The paper said the two factions were told to "unite", and the US government pledged $1 million. The following is a statement by Welshman Ncube, secretary general of the MDC faction led by Arthur Mutambara:

By Prof Welshman Ncube

THE
story which appeared in Wednesday's Herald headlined, "Dell summons, tells MDC factions to re-unite" is a malicious fabrication which has absolutely no iota of truth.

The alleged MDC delegation which is claimed to have attended the purported meeting and which is said to have included the party President, Professor Arthur Mutambara , Deputy President Gibson Sibanda , Secretary General, Professor Welshman Ncube and Defense and Security Secretary Job Sikhala is a figment of the imagination of the Herald editors and their CIO handlers.

There has never been such an MDC delegation. No such meeting took place on the 9th of January 2007 or on any other date! The alleged meeting is a delusional creation of the state agents who run The Herald.

As a matter of fact the MDC leadership has not had any meeting with the United States Ambassador, Mr. Christopher Dell or any official of the US Embassy in nearly six months.

The alleged content of the alleged meeting is equally fictitious. The purported discussion never took place. The alleged instruction was never given as no such meeting took place!

We hereby place it on record that there is no situation or circumstance under which the MDC as an independent national political party would entertain let alone receive any instructions whatsoever from any quarter.

We in the MDC are disgusted by the level of desperation which is being exhibited by the regime through its agents and which is manifesting itself in high fiction articles that are splashed in the government newspapers regularly to try and soil the image of the opposition

We wish to remind those in government that no amount of fiction writing will solve the crisis that is facing the nation.
