ZIMBABWEAN opposition leader Arthur Mutambara was injured Saturday while campaigning in rural Chiredzi South, his Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party said.

A brief statement from the party did not state the cause of the crash.

Mutambara, the leader of one of the two MDC factions, was travelling to Chiredzi from Harare with four other senior officials, including the deputy secretary general, Priscilla Misihairabwi MP (Glen Norah).

Mutambara is said to haved been at the wheel of his Toyata Land Cruiser when it burst a front tyre and rolled several times, according to one report.

Misihairabwi; the party's National Chairperson for the Women’s Assembly, Hilda Sibanda, and two others were injured during the crash and rushed to Chikombedzi hospital.

"Information at hand so far indicates that the vehicle they were traveling in
overturned and was extensively damaged, resulting in the occupants receiving
injuries," Chaibva said.

"All the occupants were rushed to Chikombedzi Hospital where they are
said to be in a stable condition and out of danger."

For the Chiredzi South by-election, the Mutambara-faction is fielding Nehemiah Samuel Zanamwe, while another faction led by Morgan Tsvangirai is drumming up support for Emmaculate Makondo and Zanu PF is fielding retired Colonel Kallisto Gwanetsa.

Last week Mutambara launched his "defiance campaign". He declared his party was ready to tackle President Robert Mugabe.
