Geoff Nyarota: Jesus' missing disciple?

Following Geoffrey Nyarota's
initial opinion article in the Financial Gazette, a Michael Mtungwa responded through the Zimbabwe Independent stirring further controversy and now highlighting Nyarota's alleged inadequacies in reporting the Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland as editor of the Chronicle. Nyarota responded once again through the Financial Gazette and took aim at Independent publisher, Trevor Ncube whom he says "has never liked me". The Independent simply responded by publishing an e-mail sent by Nyarota to Ncube, and his reply. Bekithemba Mhlanga joins the debate:

LET us cut through the Geoff Nyarota, Trevor Ncube, Michael Mtungwa cheese.

Geoff Nyarota is upset that his forthcoming publication's success maybe scuppered by comments made by some individuals, in this case persons that he has investigated and established beyond reasonable doubt that during the day they are commonly known as Trevor Ncube, the publisher of the Independent and the Standard.

One suspects that given Nyarota's much acclaimed investigation of the Willowgate scandal he is some Shylock Holmes and therefore his deduction that the author of his woes in this case must be Trevor Ncube is correct. However, people who worked in the Chronicle newsroom during Willowgate will beg to differ on how the Willowgate story ended up on Nyarota's desk and will speak with a deep sense of shame that the scribe who rightly should be accorded the glory went to his grave a bitter, poor and disgruntled fellow. The hope is that all this will be revealed in July when Nyarota's book hits the shelves.

Some will say Geoff is simply bending the truth, as he has repeatedly done in his long articles in the Financial Gazette in the last two weeks. Historians, traditionalists and academics must be running around to check the veracity of the origins of the Mtungwas. My brother in law is a Mtungwa and is definitely not in anyway as scoped by Geoff, but if Nyarota says Mtungwas are Kalangas, then it must be right.

He just does not stop at that, but pontificates about the need for juniors, subordinates and fellow practitioners to sympathies with him every time he loses his job. It's not clear why this should be the case. The fact that he got fired three times appears to be a measure of either his incompetence, an inflated ego or both. In all the cases he was dismissed because he was right and everyone was wrong. When will this man be declared as the missing disciple in Jesus' team? Indeed newspapers, television stations and other media routinely rib each other when competition hits hard times and editors always make fun at colleagues in similar positions. Nyarota must have experienced this before and continue to do so wherever he is at the moment. It's called the school of hard knocks.

As if that is not enough, we are informed that during his settlement in Bulawayo he never met academics and civil liberties campaigners who sang the praises of Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF. Again, it would be interesting to read the articles he wrote or comments he made to reflect this or he was banking them for July? Don't hold your breath.

If indeed Geoff Nyarota is a firm believer in the freedom of expression, why does he think he needs the protection of his colleagues against attacks by the likes of Mtungwa? If he would go to the extent of using a fake name to attack somebody else why does he think Trevor will do the same? What makes him think that the Welshman Ncubes, Trevor Ncubes , Mduduzi Mathuthus and Mtungwas of this world are all against him. Is it just because they have a different view to his opinions ?

The last time I saw a picture of Nyarota he was losing some of his hair and I hope that is the only thing falling off his head. I look forward to his book in July.

Before Nyarota locates me in the wrong place, let me state that I am not from Mozambique or Chipinge and my name is the same as is shown in all my documents issued by the registrar general's office in Zimbabwe.
