• South Africa sees progress in Zimbabwe

SOUTH Africa's Foreign Minister Dlamini Zuma has been waxing lyrical about Robert Mugabe' commitment to a democratic election in Zimbabwe.

She says Mugabe has, so far, played to the election guidelines set by Sadc.

Zimbabweans who have increasingly grown sick of President Thabo Mbeki making a monkey of democracy in Zimbabwe, will, without doubt, see this as yet another slap on their faces.

Zimbabweans would be rightly asking: does Mugabe need to throw a grenade over the Limpopo River for Mbeki and his sleeping Cabinet to notice the tragedy across the border?

So far, Zuma has hopped into bed with Zimbabwe's Foreign Minister Stan Mudenge, and they are now singing the same tune.

Mugabe doesn't need an envoy in Pretoria. Why, when Zuma is doing the job at the expense of the South African tax payer? She has totally ignored Mugabe's gerrymandering which is currently the source of a court action in Zimbabwe.

Her positive message about Mugabe ignores the fact that only last week, over 30 Zanu PF youths marched on a police station in Norton. A police officer was stabbed, paying the price for having dared arrest a Mugabe thug.

What chance, if any, is there for the conduction of a free and fair election when the police are brutalised by bands of thugs in the name of a revolution?

What chance is there of the opposition parties getting a fair election when three independent newspapers are off the streets because they dared give a voice to the opposition?

What chance is there of a free election in a country where foreign journalists are banned, and and an unelected minister given power to decide who should practise as a journalist?

What chance when an unelected minister dabbles in semantics, telling the world that the opposition can only access broadcast public media and not Press?

And what chance when a police chief and a top judge refer to Robert Mugabe, mastermind of the death of over 20 000 minority Ndebeles, as Zimbabwe's "top policeman"?

If you are Zuma, and if you are a minister in Thabo Mbeki's sleeping Cabinet, a free and fair election is possible.

If you are a Zimbabwean, crying for that right to be allowed to choose a leader of your choice, you can only say: Fuck Zuma!
