| Miss Zimbabwe UK contest changes venue
By Showbiz Reporter The organiers said the venue switch was necessary because they now feared the Alexandra Palace venue could prove too small against the heightened public interest. The ZimExpo UK will start off with the business exhibition on Saturday 27 August from 11AM - 6PM, followed soon after by the Miss Zimbabwe UK contest which will finish in the early hours of Sunday morning. On Sunday, a football tournament featuring eight teams will bring the curtain down to the annual exhibition which first started in the United States. The highlight of the event has been traditionally the Miss Zimbabwe contest. Rudo Change, a trainee physician, was acrowned Miss Zimbabwe USA at the ZimExpo USA in June this year. The organisers of the Miss Zimbabwe UK are eager to avoid last year's embarassment when New Zimbabwe.com sensationally revealed the eventual winner, Hilda Mate Kole, was in fact Ghanaian, and the first princess Angel Nxumayo, South African. Chris Masikati, one of the event's organisers has promised there will be thorough checks this time. "This time we are very strict on entry," he said. "We are open to all Zimbabweans, whether they are white, mixed race or black." About 24 Zimbabwean girls have applied to take part in the contest. The organisers say they will take applications until Friday 26 August when the pre-screening will be done to whittle down the numbers. "We have the
widest selection ever," Ezra Tshisa Sibanda, one of the organisers
said. "We have girls from Manchester, Leicester, Birmingham, Coventry,
Scotland, Brighton, Southend, Luton and London. It's certainly a notch
up from last year." |
