Leeds hosts Miss Afro UK 2006

By Showbiz Reporter

ORGANISERS of next week's inaugural Miss Afro UK 2006 to be held in Leeds are promising an event "rich in intellectual, social and cultural substance".

The beauty pageant, open to all girls of "African ancestry", is set to be held at the luxurious Leeds Royal Armouries Museum on Saturday next week.

Charity Dube, one of the organisers of the red carpet event said this week: "We are seeking to promote the African Renaissance through showcasing African culture by bringing together and facilitating interactions between Africans of all origin in the UK."

Sixteen girls from across the African continent will parade in African wear, swim wear and evening wear. They will also be judged on talent, a category in which the contestants showcase their natural talents, from singing to gymnastics.

Dube said: "The contestants will get to have their say when they vote for the Miss Personality among them. The audience, for their part, will select Miss Legs after the swim wear category."

The winner of the pageant, partly sponsored by Moneygram and Virgin
Active, will work with the Plan International UK charity on some of its African projects.

The Miss Afro UK 2006 pageant will be held at the Leeds Royal Armouries Museum on Saturday, September 30. For more information and tickets please visit the AFRO TRENDS website or call 07739 303 160
