| 13 vie for Miss Zimbabwe UK crown

The contestants are drawn from around the UK. Organisers have been trying to spruce up the image of the pageant, whose winner will participate in the Miss Zimbabwe proper. In the past, Miss Zimbabwe UK was held on the sidelines of the ZimExpo Business exhibition, a concept first started by Zimbabweans based in the United States. But Miss Zimbabwe pageant organisers decided to stage a “better and slicker” stand-alone show this year. Faith Matambanashe will be at hand to pass on her crown after winning the title last year. The girls will parade in various outfits, including the traditional Zimbabwean nhembe/chinyakare. Categories will include swim wear, African wear and evening wear, said Roda Magwizi for the organisers. “We believe we have assembled a group of girls of varied talents and a range of attributes that represent our country well,” said Magwizi. The event normally attracts the glitterati of Zimbabwean celebrity. “We’ll be serving traditional food and the event has a bar. There will also be entertainment by unsigned Zimbabwean singers,” Magwizi said. Last year's winner Faith Matambanashe took part in Miss Tourism World late last year and raised money for a children’s orphanage in Zimbabwe. The Miss Zimbabwe 2007 pageant is held at the Crystal Hall in Forest Hill, London (SE23 2NE) on Saturday, August 25. Doors open at 7PM and the pageant begins at 8PM. Tickets cost £20. Call 08704867466 or 07984172401 to book.
