Makwavarara's US$27 000 Russian jaunt By Staff
Reporter Sekesayi Makwavarara, who was elected to the Harare council on an MDC ticket before deserting back to Zanu PF, is expected to lead a delegation of four to the Russian capital to "establish development co-operation between the two cities", according to council minutes. Makwavarara was appointed to run the affairs of the Harare City Council as chairperson of a commission appointed by Local Government Minister, Ignatius Chombo. Harare's elected mayor, Elias Mudzuri was suspended and consequently fired by Chombo on corruption allegations. Following his sacking, the MDC withdrew all its councillors. No date has been announced for the trip but the other commission members last Thursday okayed the trip subject to approval from Town Clerk, Nomutsa Chideya, and the availability of foreign currency. Zimbabwe is going
through its worst economic crisis, with many services grinding to a
halt partly due to a critical shortage of foreign currency. |
