Mwaruwari sets Pompey target
By Sports
Reporter The 29-year-old Zimbabwean who joined Portsmouth for a club record fee of £4.1 million in the summer of 2005 has not hit the heights that he touched at French club Auxerre. He revealed: “I still feel I haven’t reached my goals that I set out to achieve when I came here. I can only be satisfied if I start scoring between 10 and 15 goals a season and last season I only had seven goals.” Mwaruwari returned from his summer holiday last week and joined his team-mates for Pompey’s pre-season training. He will fly out to Hong Kong this week for a mini-tournament also featuring Champions League finalists Liverpool. The Zimbabwean skipper says Portsmouth’s new signings this season show the club wants to launch a serious challenge for a top six finish which would guarantee the club European football next season. He said: “What we achieved as a team last season set the tone for this season. In the last few seasons, the club has been always fighting relegation. Last season showed that if we dream, then we can achieve. “The new arrivals at the club will certainly bring welcome competition for starting positions, and I prefer it like that than to sit back and relax knowing there is only one or two other players challenging for the position. “The manager
is showing that we are aiming high this season and I am more than 100
percent committed to the cause.” - The New Zimbabwe |
