Mwaruwari named skipper, scores for Pompey

By Nkanyiso Moyo

BENJANI Mwaruwari’s flying start to the new English Premiership season continued Wednesday night after he powerfully headed home Portsmouth’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with champions, Manchester United.

The Warriors skipper met Matt Taylor’s exquisite cross from the left on 53 minutes, directing his header low past a wrong-footed Edwin van der Sar.

Manchester United had earlier taken the lead through a trademark Paul Scholes scorcher hit from just outside the box.

Mwaruwari was in top form during the off-season and helped Portsmouth win the Asia Trophy in Hong Kong, beating Liverpool in the final.

In an exclusive interview with New Zimbabwe.com, Mwaruwari set himself a target of double-figure goals this season after expressing disappointment with his seven goals in the last campaign.

Last week, on the first day of the new season, he started brightly and scored Portsmouth’s opener against newly-promoted Derby.

Portsmouth play Bolton next. Bolton have lost their first two games of the season, the latest a 2-1 defeat against Fulham on Wednesday.
