MANCHESTER City confirmed the signing of Benjani Mwaruwari on Tuesday after forcing Portsmouth into accepting more than half the £9,7 million fee agreed last week.

A club statement said the striker had been sold for £3,87 million on a two-and-half-year deal.

Portsmouth could still get the other half of the payment if the Zimbabwe soccer captain starts in 75 matches.

The Premier League and Football Association have approved the transfer, and the Benjani joined up with his Manchester City team-mates at their Carrington training ground on Tuesday afternoon.

Mwaruwari joined Portsmouth from French club Auxerre for £4,1 million.

City manager, Sven-Goran Eriksson said of the deal: “I am delighted that we have signed such a quality player, and I am looking forward to working with him straight away.”
