BENJANI Mwaruwari has revealed Manchester City skipper Richard Dunne played a key role in his transfer deadline day switch from Portsmouth.

Benjani told The New Zimbabwe he had first heard of City’s interest from Portsmouth defender, Sylvan Distin, who had spoken to Dunne, a former team-mate.

Mwaruwari revealed: “Distin showed me a text from Dunne saying Benjani is joining us. I understand Dunne told the coaching staff at Manchester City to come get me because he found me a tough opponent.

“That, coming from a top class defender like Dunne, is really a huge compliment and it makes it all the more easier for me to blend in with the new team.”

Mwaruwari scored his first goal for City in his debut last Sunday in a 2-1 win over Premier League champions Manchester United.

He revealed: “Dunne came to me after the game and said he could send a driver to fetch me if I was free later for a few drinks. He is not just a great footballer, but a great man too.”

Mwaruwari has been staying in a Manchester hotel as he searches for a house.

And speaking after Sunday’s derby win, Dunne paid glowing tribute to the Zimbabwean striker.

He said: “Benjani is an instant hero now. I know how hard he is to mark so I know what a handful he is. I think he will be great asset for this club.”
