ENGLISH Premier League club Portsmouth have been hit with a Football Association charge for allegedly breaching agent regulations in the purchase and subsequent transfer of Zimbabwean striker Benjani Mwaruwari.

Agent Willie McKay has also been subject to a charge that relates to the deals that saw the striker join Portsmouth in January 2006 and then move to Manchester City two years later.

The FA prohibits agents from acting for two separate clubs in consecutive transfers involving one player and allege that McKay and Portsmouth contravened these rules in their dealings with Benjani.

“Portsmouth FC and players' agent Willie McKay have been charged with breaches of FA rules connected to the transfer of Benjani Mwaruwari to and from the club,” read an FA statement.

“Under The FA's Football Agents Regulations, agents are prohibited from acting for two different clubs in two consecutive transactions involving the same player. Clubs are not allowed to use the services of an agent in such circumstances.

“It is alleged that McKay acted on behalf of AJ Auxerre in respect of the transfer of Benjani from Auxerre to Portsmouth in January 2006 and then on behalf of Portsmouth in respect of Benjani's transfer from Portsmouth to Manchester City in January 2008, which was the immediately subsequent completed transaction involving the player.

“Both parties have until 29 August to respond to the charges.”

Mwaruwari told New Zimbabwe.com: "I have never met this man (McKay), and this is clearly nothing to do with me."
