34 injured as train derails in Victoria Falls

By Staff Reporter

THIRTY-FOUR people were injured, four of them seriously, when a passenger train derailed in western Zimbabwe, state radio reported on Thursday.

The train was travelling from the resort town of Victoria Falls to the second city of Bulawayo on Thursday morning when 10 coaches and a dining car derailed, the report said.

Thirty of the passengers were taken to Dete Clinic where they were treated and discharged, according to a National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) spokesperson.

Of the four people who were seriously hurt, three were taken to hospital in Hwange while another was taken to Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe's railway system links major cities in the country, but like many other services in the cash-strapped southern African country, lacks money for maintenance. - Sapa
