PETER Ndlovu's sleazy off-the-field lifestyle could have cost him an extension to his contract, terminated by English first division club Sheffield United on Tuesday, friends of the star said.

Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock was full of praise for the 31-year-old striker as he announced the club was terminating his contract.

But friends fear Ndlovu's much publicised womanising and tax dodging had pushed United manager Neil Warnock over the edge.

"It was the right time and this will give Peter the chance of a new start," said Warnock. "He proved a splendid acquisition for us. We've had value for money from Peter, although he didn't have the best of times last season after a great start in the first couple of months."

Only last week, Ndlovu was in the headlines after failing to pay council tax for his Sheffield flat and had to be dragged before the courts where he was fined.

"It seems the club wanted to extend his contract but Warnock was concerned about Ndlovu's off-the-field conduct," a close friend of the star said. "Warnock is an ambitious manager and anything short of professionalism is a ticket out of Sheffield."

Although he is married to long-time girlfriend Sharon Dee, Ndlovu has been in the headlines over a string of tryists with other women, including an alleged fraudster.

Ndlovu was recently rumoured to be moving to Stoke City but the reports were watered down by a club statement which said there was no intention to engage the services of the Zimbabwean international captain.

Warnock said he believed Ndlovu could be moving to South Africa where Kaizer Chiefs have made it public that he is their chief target.

However, Ndlovu might yet stay in England after his manager Winston Makamure flew in last week in a last ditch effort to keep him in one of the lower English leagues.
