PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe and First Lady, Grace, visited Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai at a private hospital in Harare on Friday night, hours after a car crash claimed his wife’s life and left him with neck and head injuries.

Britain said it was "deeply saddened" by Susan Tsvangirai’s death in the crash that happened as the couple were visiting Buhera – Tsvangirai’s rural home.

Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara, who leads a rival MDC faction which is also in the coalition government with Mugabe and Tsvangirai, described Susan Tsvangirai as "wonderful, warm and down-to-earth".

"The MDC is shocked and deeply sorry about her tragic death," Mutambara said in a statement.

A major investigation into the accident is underway.

Witnesses said a haulage truck travelling in the opposite direction sideswiped the Prime Minister’s MDC-party issued 4x4 vehicle, forcing it to roll three times. Susan, who was reportedly seated on the right side in the back of the Landcruiser died on the spot. Tsvangirai, his driver and another aide who was in the car, are all admitted at Avenues Clinic.

The driver of the truck has been arrested.

Arriving at the Clinic where Tsvangirai is said to be in a “stable condition”, Mugabe made no comments to waiting reporters. A pose of photographers assembled outside.

In London, a Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are deeply saddened to hear news of Susan Tsvangirai's death and we offer our condolences. We are monitoring the situation closely."
