A LEGISLATOR for Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has been arrested in the capital Harare for allegedly insulting President Robert Mugabe.

Timothy Mubhawu, the MP for the low-income townships of Mabvuku and Tafara, was arrested on Tuesday night under Zimbabwe's tough security laws.

He is alleged to have given a lift to a group of soldiers in his car on March 3.

As the soldiers were getting out, he allegedly asked one of them: "Why do you let (President) Mugabe let you suffer?."

One of the soldiers reported him to the police.

Mubhawu was expected to appear in court soon. He denies the charge.

His lawyer, Alec Muchadehama, said: "We are still getting the proper facts from police."

Insulting the president is a serious offence in Zimbabwe and can carry a jail term. - Sapa-dpa
