Statement by Prof Arthur Mutambara

By Staff Reporter

ARTHUR Mutambara, the new leader of a faction of the Movement for Democratic Change, the split opposition in Zimbabwe, has pledged to strengthen the party to topple President Mugabe.

Mutambara told a rally of about 4,000 people in Bulawayo: “We will build a formidable and serious political party that is democratic.”

Referring to Morgan Tsvangirai, who was re-elected to lead the movement’s other faction, he said: “Our problem has been dictatorship. You can’t unseat Mugabe if you are a dictator and adopt violence as a strat egy. We believe in using unity to defeat a dictatorship.”

Mutambara said that the party would develop programmes to create jobs.

“Often, politicans make promises that when we get into power we will do this and that for you.

“I am promising to deliver from now. We can’t wait until 2008 (for general elections). Most of us will be dead by then from hunger,” he said - AFP
