FIVE youths from Zimbabwe's main opposition party, accused of attacking three party members who registered as candidates for next month's controversial senate elections, have appeared in court.

The five Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) supporters allegedly followed the three senatorial candidates after they filed their nomination papers at a court in Gweru on Monday.

"When they reached the district administrator's offices, a short distance away, the accused persons allegedly started assaulting the three with booted feet and clenched fists," the state-run Herald newspaper reported.

"They also pelted them with stones when they tried to flee," the report added.

The five appeared in court on Wednesday and were remanded on bail of ZIM$2-million (about R509-million).

The MDC has been bitterly divided over the issue of participation in a new senate, set up under constitutional changes approved by President Robert Mugabe's party earlier this year.

One faction, led by MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai, is fiercely opposed to taking part in the senate polls, arguing that Zimbabwe's electoral system is skewed in favour of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front party.

But an equally powerful faction believes boycotting the elections would only be to the disadvantage of the party because it would give more ground to Zanu PF. - Sapa-dpa
