Mugabe's top bodyguard dies By Staff
Reporter Winston Changara, 52, a Senior Police Assistant Commissioner and formerly one of Mugabe's most trusted guards died at Parirenyatwa Hospital Monday. A police spokesman said his death was "sudden", without giving the cause of his death. Changara was removed from Mugabe's security team reportedly after First Lady, Grace, claimed he had made sexual advances towards her. In turn, Changara reportedly told a panel of senior police officers that he had been framed by Mrs Mugabe who feared he would disclose details of her alleged trysts with an exiled businessman. However, after a brief stint out in the cold, Changara had been recently co-opted back into President Mugabe's security team. A statement released by police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena said last night: "The commissioner of police, deputy commissioners, officers and members of the police have been deeply shocked by the sudden death and extend their deepest condolences to the Changara family, relatives and friends. "The death of Senior Assistant Commissioner Changara has indeed robbed the nation of a true hero, hard working and resourceful police officer." Changara, a veteran of Zimbabwe's liberation war in the 1970s, was born in Mt Darwin on July 17, 1954. He was appointed aide de camp to President Mugabe in 1982. He
was a decorated officer with four medals in recognition of his service
to Zimbabwe. |
