FYA's Emma: the pursuit of a dream

By Tatenda Muchinga

TENDAI Muparutsa of the RUNN Family fame has died.

He was 38.

Tendai died at the Mutare General Hospital on Sunday after a long illness.

Born in Mutare, Tendai’s musical career started at a tender age when he played keyboards for The RUNN Family, a very popular outfit in the late ’80s that comprised Fortune and Peter Muparutsa.

When the group disbanded, Tendai joined Assegai Crew in October 1999 teaming up with the late Stobart Chidikano who had formed the band in 1996.

Tendai did two albums with Assegai Crew, in 2001 they recorded Mabororo (Disaster) and a recent album entitled Hemwaimboti.

On these albums, Tendai played keyboards as well as a leading vocalist covering the void left by Chidikano.

Muparutsa will be mainly remembered for his patriotic sentiments he delivers when launching their album Mabororo (Disaster) in 2001.

"As social analysts, we want to know why people are suffering in war and political violence around the world; should we stand by and not condemn the brutal acts?

There should be no racial discrimination, hatred or fight because people end up suffering," he was quoted as saying.

Assegai Crew band manager Rex Kabwato, described Tendai as a hardworking and dedicated member who had vast experience in music industry.

Tendai is survived by his wife and a four-year-old son, Tinaye.

He was buried on Monday at Dangamvura Cemetery - Herald
