ZIMBABWE-BORN South African singer Amon Mvula has died.

He was 36.

His brother, Mike, confirmed the Makorokoto star, who was signed to Gallo Record Company in South Africa, died over the weekend.

A household name in Venda music, Mvula was being treated for pneumonia at a Harare Hospital just before he died.

In a statement, his record label described him as a "cheerful, happy-go-lucky man".

"Many will remember Amon as the fun loving traditionalist who combined his singing and song-writing skills with his trademark ‘bicycle’ dance, whereby he spun a bicycle wheel on various parts of his body including his hands, belt buckle and face, making his performances energetic and well-loved," said Gallo.

His musical style was unique in that it combined Zimbabwean rhythms with Venda lyrics.

Mvula won two SAMA Awards for his contribution to his musical genre and will best be remembered for his outstanding album ‘African Rhumba’.

He had just released his brand new album through Gallo, entitled ‘50/50’, which was produced by the legendary Zimbabwean producer Zozo.
