“THE man who will not execute his resolutions when they are fresh upon him can have no hope from them afterwards,” Irish novelist Marie Edgeworth once said, “they will be dissipated, lost and perish in the hurry and scurry of the world, or sunk in the slough of indolence.”

Making a New Year’s resolution is a seasonal hobby for everyone, but few actually manage to follow through with the vows they commit themselves to. Yet it’s everyone’s wish to succeed, and perform better than in the previous year.

We asked a few Zimbabwean celebrities and prominent personalities what 2008 holds for them.

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor Dr Gideon Gono, currently riding a torrent of criticism after cash shortages at banks ruined Christmas for millions of people, surprisingly remains calm and steadfast in the face of fierce condemnation.

Gono, who is on holiday in Asia, said: “This is the final lap. It is important that as Zimbabweans we work hard from all corners of our endeavours to win. Well-meaning Zimbabweans have been always fighting to win over challenges and as the RBZ Governor, I am prepared to work towards achieving victory in the current economic challenges.”

Gono is in his final year as the Governor of the RBZ, but his term could be extended when it expires on December 3.

Zimbabwe's most celebrated musician, Oliver 'Tuku" Mtukudzi says he does not think twice when it comes to resolutions.

"I would like to be alive in 2008. This is my resolution. If I am alive, then I can contribute towards raising my family and uplifting Zimbabwean music. All I just want is life."

Everyone associated with this iconic star shares his resolutions.

Professor Jonathan Moyo, a somewhat controversial former government spin doctor now shouting from the opposition benches after beating both Zanu PF and the MDC candidates in the race for Tsholotsho as an independent, says he intends to run again and win this year, more likely as a member of a broad-based coalition.

“I want to act in concert with other progressive and patriotic Zimbabweans to rescue Robert Mugabe and his ilk by comprehensively defeating them in the 2008 general election,” Moyo said.

Former Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) chairman and Makonde MP Leo Mugabe, who is rumoured to be working towards having another crack at the country’s top football post, said only he wanted to pursue “big things”.

Said Mugabe: "Big things are popping and small things dropping. Having made a steady entry into 2008, I am looking forward to big things. What is important is to work towards big things and forget about small things that were dropped in the past year."

CAPS United assistant coach Gishon Ntini says he wants to be part of a success story again at United.

Gisha, as he is affectionately known, was deputy to Charles Mhlauri during the two years of a Makepekepe 'hurricane' when they won back-to-back league titles.

Said Ntini: "We hope to achieve big things in 2008 at CAPS United. This is a year where we have to prove that our squad has come of age. Winning the title would be the perfect proof."

Zimbabwe national soccer team captain and Portsmouth striker Benjani Mwaruwari said: “Sometime last year, I set a target to score 15 goals in the current English premiership season. The season is not yet over. I am on 9 goals and well on course to achieving that.”

Big Brother star Makosi Musambasi says she has had it with New Year’s resolutions. So, she has a clever idea. Don’t make one!

She said: “My resolution this year is not to have a resolution. I always break them two days into the New Year. I intend to be happy as usual and live my life as I love it. I also want to be in touch with Africa a bit more, and I am hoping to go to Africa very soon.”

Reigning Miss Zimbabwe UK Sindiso Muhlwa says she thinks she has finally decided what to do with the rest of her life.

She said: “I want to pursue acting as my goal. That’s what I want to do. I am going to drama school in October. I will just work as much as I can in pursuit of that goal.”
