Soul Brother faces firearm possession, assault charges
David Masondo was waiting in the Protea magistrate's court holding cells in Soweto on Thursday morning prior to his court appearance.
Masondo, 58, was dressed in a navy blue shirt and blocked his face with a book as photographers tried to take his picture. Spokesperson Inspector Kay Makhubele said police had been looking for David Masondo since February 2. "A case was opened and a protection order was sought against him by his wife, Nomsa," Makhubele said. "Masondo arrived at home today [Wednesday] unaware of the protection order, and the wife alerted the police." Makhubele said the two often fought, and the wife decided to seek a protection order when a firearm was pointed at her. Masondo was served with the protection order on his arrest and would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Thursday. He is facing charges of assault and pointing a firearm. The Soul Brothers have recorded more than 30 albums since their formation in 1974. Initially formed in KwaZulu-Natal, the group became one of the most successful proponents of the mbaqanga sound that dominated South African urban music for several decades. Masondo started
as the group's drummer but later moved to lead vocals. - Sapa |
