SOUTH African screen legend Ma Daphney Hlomuka-Ngubane, famous for her leading role in the popular TV series S’gudi S’nays, has died.

A statement from the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) said she died after a long illness in the morning of Wednesday, October 1.

Hlomuka-Ngubane starred in the SABC drama as Joe ‘S’dumo’ Mafela’s long suffering and big-hearted landlord who repeatedly battles her moral conscience over the latter’s non-payment of rent and untidy habits.

In the series, ‘Sis' May’ fails to meet her own deadlines of evicting S’dumo – either because she is suddenly overcome by sadness, or S’dumo has conned his way into a stay of execution after a lucky day at the races or after a streak of luck at card gambling.

‘Sis' May’ also has to deal with a steady stream of debt collectors coming for her jobless tenant after another drinking spree (on credit) kwaMathema, on top of the unwelcome visits by S’dumo’s much despised drinking mates – FK and Gundi.

The SABC which employed Hlomuka-Ngubane as a call centre agent described her as a “shining First Citizen” and a “valued member of the team”.

The broadcaster said S’gudi S’nays was “one of the many colourful and engaging characters she played in her illustrious acting career". She had acting roles in Shaka Zulu, Soweto Green, Hlala Kwabafileyo and Ubambo Lwami among other short movies and dramas.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said he was not sure what illness Hlomuka-Ngubane had encountered or how old she was, although she can be described as "middle aged".

Funeral arrangements were being made as relatives and friends gathered at her house in Soweto, Johannesburg.
