Moyo takes Caps, H'landers to Tsholotsho By
Staff Reporter Newly crowned premier league champions Caps will battle former champions Highlanders for the prize money of $50 million on Saturday at Tsholotsho Business Centre. The clash is being dubbed the Battle of Tsholotsho. This is the latest in a litany of propaganda coups by Moyo, who has been building a personal fiefdom in his home district of Tsholotsho with an eye on the parliamentary seat in next March's parliamentary elections. The tournament follows a beauty contest held in the district in September. Tsholotsho, a rural outpost of Matabeleland North province is close to the border with Botswana. The district has witnessed phenomenal development since Moyo became minister in 2000. From a run-down growth point, Tsholotsho now has tower lights, banks, mobile phone network coverage and tarred roads. Schools, hospitals and police stations are all equipped with computer technology donated by Moyo. Moyo wrapped-in senior football administrators for a smooth running of the match, including former Zifa chairman Vincent Pamire, former national team coach Gibson Homela and Ndumiso Gumede. Pamire said the winners will walk away with $35 million and the losers $15 million. For Jonathan Moyo, the Tsholotsho constituency -- currently held by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)'s Mtoliki Sibanda -- is at stake. Moyo has been undeterred
by a public rebuke from President Robert Mugabe and his omission from
the ruling Zanu PF's central committee for organising an "illegal"
meeting in Tsholotsho. At that meeting, it is said Moyo tried to block
Joyce Mujuru's nomination for second vice President in favour of Emmerson
Mnangagwa. |
