No place for Masakadza in World Cup squad By Sports
Reporter There were no big surprises in the team as only Hamilton Masakadza -- who is preferred for Test matches -- was left out in favour of Friday Kasteni, who only made his debut against Bangladesh in Harare last week. Stuart Matsikenyeri is the only survivor from the 2003 World Cup in Zimbabwe's squad for the 2007 tournament in the West Indies. Left-hander Kasteni, 18, who impressed during the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka last year and his performances in the Zimbabwe A team against South Africa last month, must have attracted the eyes of the national selectors. Zimbabwe is in the same group as hosts West Indies, Ireland and Pakistan. The team was announced in Harare and coach Kevin Curran said this was the team was the best they could come up with after the country lost several experienced players in recent months. “We believe we will do out best as long as all players have self confidence. It is good that the opening game is against Ireland and if we win there, as I expect, that will further give the boys further confidence,” said Curran.
Zimbabwe:
Prosper Utseya (captain), Gary Brent, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Elton Chigumbura,
Keith Dabengwa, Terrence Duffin, Anthony Ireland, Friday Kasteni, Stuart
Matsikenyeri, Christopher Mpofu, Tawanda Mupariwa, Edward Rainsford,
Vusumuzi Sibanda, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams |
