Tongai Moyo in yet another car crash

By Trust Khosa

TONGAI Moyo who is prone to road accidents and a victim of complicated family matters that on several occasions have threatened his musical career has rejected claims he is cursed.

The Kwekwe-based sungura musician who on several occasions lost musical kits especially in road accidents, said these and other problems he had encountered were a “passing phase”.

“There is no mystery here. As humans, we are bound to face problems,” he told The Daily Mirror newspaper.

The latest in Moyo's long list of road accidents came last week when his band members were involved in a road accident in Gweru on their return from a tour of Beitbridge and Chiredzi.

“I am glad that two of my band members who were admitted in hospital early this (last) week are now fit although one of them (dancer) still has some complications,” he said.

Moyo also said that normalcy was back at the band despite being robbed of musical instruments on several occasions. He vowed to continue re-building his band Utakataka Express.

In 2001, Moyo lost the whole kit and a vehicle on their return from Chiweshe where they had gone for a live show.

Two years later, he lost a father while he was bound for his tour of the United Kingdom. He proceeded for the tour and returned to bury his father. The incident generated much debate with some sections of the media debating that Moyo should have cancelled or postponed his trip abroad and mourn his father first.

In March this year, Moyo lost electrical gadgets to thieves who broke into his Kwekwe residence and swept away property worth $30 million. He said the property is yet to be recovered.

Despite all these and other incidents that have seen him losing valuable property, Moyo vowed to transform his band into a formidable force for the future.

“Utakataka Express is here to stay and we hope to continue giving people our best,” he said.
