Mtukudzi turns 55
By Showbiz Reporter OLIVER Mtukudzi turned 55 last Saturday, and The New Zimbabwe surprised him with a rainbow-coloured cake and a birthday present at a London hotel. Tuku’s backing band, the Black Spirits and his son Sam, sang ‘Happy Birthday To You’ amid a volley of champagne fizz. The superstar musician, on a five-leg tour of the UK, thanked your favourite paper then drew cheers from the Black Spirits by saying: “Let me see how old I am…I am 55 years, seven hours and 40 minutes old.” Tuku’s son, Sam, helped his father cut the cake, then wrote on a group birthday card: “Happy birthday dad. Hope you clock 100 and more. Love you lots. Samson.” His manager, Sam Mataure said: “Thank you New Zimbabwe. It was a touching gesture.” Hours after eating cake, Mtukudzi wowed crowds at the Stratford Rex which was packed to the rafters. Promoters said some 1600 people paid their way into the venue.
