Zim man on trial over hit and run killing By Staff
Reporter The alleged driver, Sydney Chinyamakobva, then sped off, leaving the fatally injured victim in the road. But Chinyamakobva, described by the prosecution as an asylum seeker from Zimbabwe, was later identified as the driver when police found a lottery ticket with his fingerprint on it, the jury was told. Chinyamakobva (37), of Ninevah Road, Handsworth, has denied causing the death of Julie Bishton by dangerous driving on April 25 last year. Kevin Hegarty, prosecuting, said at 7.30pm, the 32-year-old woman had started to cross a zebra crossing in Bath Row, Lea Bank. One driver had stopped but a Toyota car overtook that vehicle at between 35 and 40mph and went through the crossing, striking the victim, he said. Hegarty said before the woman's body had even landed, the driver had raced off towards Five Ways. He said the victim was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of the morning as a result of her head injuries. The damaged Toyota was later discovered in a street in Edgbaston with the lottery ticket inside. The trial continues. |
