Zimbabwe refugee gets six years for hit and run killing By Staff
Reporter In passing sentence on Sydney Chinyamakobva, Judge David Matthews said there were a number of aggravating features including the fact that the defendant, who did not have a driving licence, had been "par-tying" for much of the afternoon before his Toyota struck 32-year-old Julie Bishton last April. He said Chinyamakobva's driving had been "appalling" and in recommending that he be deported after serving his sentence said he had shown a flagrant disregard for the laws of this country. He went on: "As a result of dangerous driving a young life has been extinguished and children have lost their mother. No sentence I pass can remotely compensate those children or any other member of Miss Bishton's family for their loss." Chinyamakobva (37), of Ninevah Road, Handsworth, who was found guilty of causing the death of Miss Bishton by dangerous driving last week, was also banned from the roads for four years. Kevin Hegarty, prosecuting, said the victim had started to cross a zebra crossing in Bath Row, Lea Bank, when she was hit by the defendant's vehicle. Chinyamakobva sped
from the scene and the Toyota was later found with a lottery ticket
inside which had his fingerprints on it. He claimed he had not been
the driver. |
