A ZIMBABWEAN woman was stabbed in the eye and leg with a knife and racially abused when she went into her flat to be confronted by a burglar in Dingle, near Liverpool.

Police said Friday night they had arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with the attack after earlier releasing an appeal for information on the attacker described as white, about 6ft tall, skinny with a jaundiced complexion.

Angie Ncube, 28, went into her kitchen to be confronted by the man who pushed her into a bedroom, demanding money.

Police say she escaped by jumping out of a first floor window.

Merseyside Police's Detective Chief Inspector Nicky Holland said: "This was a particularly vicious attack both in terms of the racist abuse and the seriousness of the injuries caused.

"This is a woman, living on her own, who was physically and verbally threatened in the most horrendous way.

"Our detectives are speaking to as many people as possible in the area to catch the person responsible."

Police were quizzing the man arrested Friday on suspicion of assault, aggravated burglary and racially aggravated offences.
