Mtukudzi, Jusa nominated for KORA awards
By
Showbiz Reporter Superstar Oliver Mtukudzi is nominated in the Best Artist or Group (Southern Africa) and Best Arrangement for the song Chikara. The awards ceremony is set for Calabar, Nigeria, on December 6 – the first time that the event is held out of South Africa since its inception in 2005. Organisers say Nigeria will host four more KORAs before the event is rotated to another African country. This year’s awards ceremony is being held under the marketing slogan “One Billion Viewers. One Hundred Countries. One Hundred Artistes. One Amazing Prize: One Million US Dollars”. The stunning US$1 million prize, courtesy of First Bank Nigeria, is for Best African Artist or Group which will be voted for by the public after all the nominees perform on the awards night. Mtukudzi won a KORA award in 2002 (Best Artist or Group, Southern Africa). He remains the only Zimbabwean artist to ever win a KORA. That could change this year with Jusa’s nomination -- earned following the release of his debut album, Konzeresa Riddim, out of which pops the hit track Vangani. On the official KORA website, Jusa has the second highest rating of any artist based on online public voting (see here). Jusa was born Tawanda Sibotshiwe and is a growing name in Zimbabwe’s emerging dancehall music market, known locally as Urban Grooves.
