AMAZULU picked themselves up from a financial crisis which threatened to derail their African Champions league campaign, beating Mozambique champions Maxaquene 3-4 at Machava Stadium in a preliminary round tie in Maputo.

AmaZulu go through to the second round on a 7-4 aggregate.

At Rufaro Stadium in Harare, Dynamos also made sure of their progress in the less glamorous Confederations Cup, thumping Savanne Sporting Club of Mauritius in the second leg of the preliminary round. The first leg was drawn 0-0.

AmaZulu had to be bailed out by the government after they failed to raise $110 million required to fulfil the fixture.

But what they lack in the bank was compensated with a first-half blitz in which they scored three goals through Esrom Nyandoro, Gift Zvavanhu and skipper Norman Komani before finishing the rout with a single strike by Vusa Nyoni six minutes after the restart.

Reports from Maputo say the AmaZulu defence was largely to blame for allowing a late comeback by Maxaquene who scored through Heldet, Miro and a last minute strike by Alfredo Mabui.

AmaZulu will now meet the winners of the game between Petro Atletico of Angola and Atletico Malabo of Equatorial Guinea.

As AmaZulu battled in Mozambique, Dynamos made light work of Savanne Sporting Club of Mauritius to book a date with King Faysal Club of Ghana in the next round. The first leg will be played on 11 April in Harare before the former league champions make a return visit to Ghana two weeks later.

Dynamos raced to a two-goal lead through their Zambian striker Clive Mwale before Norman Maroto completed the rout with a thumping second half strike.

He removed his T-Shirt to reveal a tribute to the late Caps United stars Blessing Makunike, Gary Mashoko and Shingirai Arlon who perished in a car crash while travelling from a league match against Sundowns in Bulawayo.
