FEARS were raised Wednesday night on the health of University of Zimbabwe students leader, Tiney Mukwewa following claims he had been tortured while in police custody.

Mukwewa, president of the UZ's student representative council was arrested on Monday.

The student leader who is being accused of taking part in the torching of Bindura University last week was first detained at Harare Central Police Station and later transferred to Bindura.

On Wednesday, the UZ SRC's secretary general Trevor Murai said he had visited Mukwewa at Harare Central and was making frantic efforts to get food and legal assistance to him.

"The president is coughing blood," he said, and claimed Mukwewa he had been tortured and denied medical treatment.

No comment was immediately available from Zimbabwean police.

The former spokesman of the Zimbabwe Students Union, Mfundo Mlilo said: “The frivolous, unfounded charges leveled against him are that he was involved in the torching of Bindura University block by students.”

He added that Zinasu president Promise Mkhwananzi was on the run from the police, pursued on the same allegations.

Zimbabwean police have effected a spate of arrests at Zimbabwean universities to contain rising tensions over tuition fees hikes.

Bindura University was torched during a student uprising last week.
