| Court
sets aside UZ fees hike
By
Staff Reporter The government hiked fees this semester, from between $6 million and $9 million per year to between $30 million and $90 million, with residence fees at the institution which opened last Monday attracting $24, 5 million. In a provisional ruling, High Court judge Alphas Chitakunye ordered the UZ to "register the applicants (students) and allow them to attend lessons without requiring them to first pay pending the processing of their loan application." The judge also said increases must not be beyond the government support grant. In the event of an appeal being lodged, the court said its provisional order shall remain operational. Two university of Zimbabwe law students, Thabani Mpofu and Musindo Hungwe lodged an urgent court application against, Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Stan Mudenge and UZ vice chancellor, Levi Nyagura, to reverse the increases. Mfundo Mlilo, the spokesperson of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (Zinasu) welcomed the judgment. "We obviously
welcome the judgment. All along, we used government grants to pay the
fees and obviously there was some change," he said. |
