UZ student leaders in defiance
By
Staff Reporter The defiance was in line with one of the resolutions arrived at Monday following an extra ordinary meeting of the Students Executive Council (SEC). The three SEC members
-- Mfundo Mlilo, Wellington Mahohoma and In an interview late Wednesday, Mlilo said: “We were there today and nothing happened. We believe, though that it is a matter of time before they come for us, but we are ready for anything.” He added: “The expulsions are politically motivated. The board that expelled us was not properly constituted. We have since written to the Vice Chancellor, Levi Nyagura telling him that the expulsions exist only in his head. Anyone who will disturb us shall face the wrath of the student union. "We will not continue to go back to the courts which are Zanu PF playgrounds. If they think that we will rush to donors to leave the country, they are mistaken. We are staying put at the university." Other resolutions were to demand a minimum living allowance (payouts) of $30 million per semester, urging all students to do a serious soul searching towards coming up with coordinated responses in affirming their rights and calling the Parliament of Zimbabwe to urgently review the UZ Act. Last week, the
country’s institutions of higher learning started expelling and
evicting students who have failed to pay tertiary and accommodation
fees. |
