30 WOZA activists held in Harare protest By Staff Reporter AROUND thirty women were reported arrested Monday in the Zimbabwean capital Harare as they prepared to stage a sit-in at council offices to protest poor service delivery. The women, all members of prominent pressure group Women of Zimbabwe Arise (Woza), were picked up before they could begin their demonstration, a statement from the group said. The sit-in had been intended to demonstrate Harare residents' anger at the shocking service delivery experienced in the capital, despite high tariffs, the statement added. It said the women had not yet been charged. Woza stages regular demonstrations against the government and municipal authorities in Harare and the second city of Bulawayo. Services in most towns and cities throughout Zimbabwe have deteriorated due to an economic crisis marked by inflation of close to 1,000 per cent. In
Harare, residents in many suburbs have to contend with burst water and
sewage pipes, uncollected refuse and broken streetlights, despite paying
large sums for water and rates. - Sapa-dpa |
