HE MISSED Zimbabwe's golden opportunity at the 2004
African Cup of Nations against Egypt in Tunisia and is now without a club in South Africa, and yet ageing Wilfred Mugeyi still has ambitions.

The Silver Fox is easily remembered in Zimbabwe for his glaring miss from close range in the dying minutes of the Africa Cup of Nations finals group match against the Pharaohs. Zimbabwe were trailing 2-1 and everything pointed to a 2-2 draw, but he blazed his effort wide.

Now every miss is referred as to "a Mugeyi". But that does dampen his spirits.

Mugeyi, 37, has revealed his desire to a reach a personal target of 150 goals in the South African Premier Soccer League before retiring in two years.

The 1992 Soccer Star of the Year told the South African media that his ambition was to go into coaching when he hangs his soccer boots. He was top goal scorer in the South African premiership in 1996 and 1997. He scooped the Players' Player of the Year award in 1996.

Together with his brother, William, they were on the books of Bush Bucks but the club went into liquidation in June.

"I'm well aware that I'm getting older but I can deliver for another two years," he said this week.

"In fact, I will really be happy and satisfied to reach that target before I retire.

"I'm training hard, twice a day, with the other players who stayed behind instead of relocating to Cape Town. There are quite a number of us here, Anele Zibi, Dumi Mpofu, Sibusiso Dabi and others. Sometimes we play friendly games against other teams from the Mvela and Vodacom Leagues as a way of keeping fit.

"Since I am a free agent, I'm hoping that I get an offer to play in January. And
then when I retire after two years, I want to go into coaching. I will be will
be contacting Conti Kubeka and starting the Level One course soon," said the former Maccabi Haifa player.

It still remains to be seen if the former Black Aces star will achieve his goals.
