Young Warriors knocked out of Youth Championships By Sports
Reporter Zimbabwe lost 4-1 on aggregate after they were comprehensively beaten 3-1 in the first leg on January 8. The Young Warriors who are coached by former Zimbabwe international striker Madinda Ndlovu yielded to Tanzania's probing when Nizar Halfan scored 36 minutes into the match. Tanzania will join seven other African nations at the finals to be staged in the tiny West African country, Gambia, in May. The top five teams will then compete in the FIFA/JVC Youth World Cup final in South Africa later this year. This is the first time for Tanzania to qualify for the finals. Zimbabwe have qualified twice, in 1997 in Guinea and in 1999 (Botswana). The experienced Zimbabwe went into both legs without playing international friendlies while Tanzania, apart from playing several local friendlies and representing Tanzania in the East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup in Addis Ababa, last year, played five qualifiers. Zimbabwe got a bye
in the preliminary round, and in the first rounds their opponents Madagascar
pulled out of the competition. |
