Zimbabwe lift Cosafa Cup
By Sports Reporter Mhlauri took a squad of local players to South Africa, ignoring pressure to bring in the big hitters from foreign leagues. After a 2-1 victory in the semi-finals over Angola on Saturday in which Francis Chandida and Sageby Sandaka scored, the Warriors were drawn with Zambia who beat South Africa in the other semi-final. The Warriors were patient against the more stylish Zambians before pulling an 84th minute sucker punch as Chandida struck to send the Zimbabwean fans at the Mmbatho Stadium into celebration. Chandida's goal came as the result of a promising attack by the Zambians down the left which was broken up by the Zimbabwe defence. Chandida finished off the counter by threading a neat left-footed prod through two defenders trying to close him down on the edge of the area, pushing the ball past the right hand of a diving Zambian goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene. Zimbabwe will pocket R600 000 for their effots. There were individual prizes for striker Brian Badza who was named player of the series. He got R20 000, and R2000 for being man-of-the-match in the Angola match. AmaZulu defender
Herbert Dick was also R2 000 richer after picking up the man of the
match award for the final. |
